The Skinny Pick of the Week!
05 June 2010

Greetings cyber friends. We're feeling a bit like someone just hit the 'summer' button, for it's Meadows Festival weekend. Ever since we were little, this has been the event that heralded the beginning of our favourite season – dodgems, candyfloss, stalls full of trinkets, old Beck CDs for a quid, and an 87% chance of rain. What could be more perfect? Not to mention the live stage that'll be providing a suitably ramshackle indie folk soundtrack. Start doing your sun dance... NOW

 Meadows Festival
The Meadows, Edinburgh
Sat 5 & Sun 6 Jun, Free
The Meadows Festival live stage is going all out this year, with a line-up of 25 acts over two days. It's a bill of nourishing folk and sun-kissed experimental ska rock: Woodenbox with A Fistful of Fivers, Inspector Tapehead, The Banana Sessions, Foxgang, and Big Fat Panda will all be in attendance. However, we're just as likely to be found rummaging the many stalls looking for treasure. Our top find of all time being a flip-face Beverly Hills 90210 watch. That's treasure you just cannae beat!

Break in at the Ghost train
02 June 2010

Last night or early this morning there was a break in at the Meadows Festival Funfair Ghost Train! "They stole a very expensive costume and mask outfit and several pieces of ghosts" said a funfair representative.

"There will be a reward if anyone can give information leading to the return of the items to the Meadows Festival Funfair  this weekend between Thursday 3rd and Sunday 6th June."

Taylors' Funfair is a traditional attraction at the Meadows Festival but nothing like this has happened before in 35 years.

Two weeks to go to the 35th Meadows Festival!

South Edinburgh's premier community festival - The Meadows Festival - is set to go ahead on the West Meadows on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June.  The event - run by a committee of local residents - will include stalls, two music stages, a school football competition, a bicycle powered cinema, a school art competition, kids tent and on Saturday only animals from the Gorgie City Farm.

"The festival is run by local people for our community" said Meadows Festival Association Convenor Fred Mackintosh "We hope to make the festival this year the best ever, but that can't happen without volunteers.  I would urge local people who want to help over the weekend to find us on Facebook, Myspace or at www.meadowsfestival.org.uk and volunteer.  They would be made most welcome."

The first Meadows Festival was held in 1974 and since then the Festival has been an annual feature of the calendar (except for a break in 2006-7).  The Festival Committee work hard throughout the year to put on the event.  In 2009 over 8,000 people attended on both days and this year the musical lineup is shaping up to be one of the best yet.  There will 25 acts over 2 stages, playing everything from funk to indie-pop and rock to samba.

Headlining the main Festival Stage will be the wonderful Banana Sessions, who have built up quite a reputation for their quirky cover versions and the mental Big Fat Panda with their own brand of wild, bouncy ska.

"We're really excited about this years lineup. We've got a really diverse range of music, a great mix of established bands and some of the best local up and coming talent. It should be a great weekend of live music on the Meadows." said Daragh Lynch, Festival Stage manager.

Tollcross Primary School hosts Meadows Festival Art Competition
15 May 2010

The winning poster designs are at the bottom of the Gallery page on this website.

Our prizes this year were supported by Quartermile and the football prize was from Taylors Funfair.

A big thank you to all the artists from the Meadows Festival Committee. Many other children (especially in the P4 classes) produced wonderful artworks that we could not award prizes to. We only had 8 Book Tokens to give out.

Two of the winners will be featured in the Festival program and others are on Facebook Meadows Festival Event and our MySpace.
